Bob’s job disappeared in the financial upheaval. We would both be perfectly willing for this blog to support us, but so far it’s not. So we have taken over a defunct supermarket a few minutes from our house.
It was a market for 40 years, but was so run down that when Mac retired, he couldn’t sell the business. It was the only market for 10 miles either direction, so we’ve taken over the lease with a neighbor and are in the process of renovating the building. This picture was taken 10 days ago: the racks, freezers and checkout counters have been removed, and we’ve cleaned out the big walk-in cooler.
Mac cut meat in the dairy cooler, and had for forty years. The cleaning process started with scraping, then a series of scrubbings, a layer of Clorox, and here’s Bob painting the floor. In Cambridge, we were a mixed marriage: Bob went to grad school at Harvard, while I went to MIT. Twenty years later, we’re cleaning a cooler in Durango, Colorado… and let me tell you, that cooler is clean.
I’ll burn some sage in it to exorcise the blood. Yuck!!
This picture was taken ten days later. The ceiling is out, and half the lights were cleaned before we realized that they have to be replaced. Two guys are doing clean-up electrical work now, and framing and sheetrocking starts Monday. Nix on the orange back wall, I’ll try a green; still thinking about the yellow.
We’re living in a new world. I’ll keep you posted.

WOW! How exciting. Best of luck ….I know your market will have the best quality of goods that can be found any where. One never knows where the path of life will lead us, plan as hard as we may. Have a great weekend.
Out of Need and Necessity…..
Fabulous!!!! I can’t wait to see what y’all grow!!!!
Seriously??? You’re going to open a food market??? Please, do tell us more about that. This is so exciting! I’d love to hear more about that.
Sounds like an interesting and exciting endeavor you and Bob are embarking on.
I like your idea of painting a wall green. Is it a color that will encourage people to eat and spend money?!
Have you decided on on a name for the market?
Best of luck, and as always I look forward to seeing and hearing more!
